The change in the map is impressive when the Mongols show up.

it really highlights just how dynamic borders and countries have been even into the present day. people tend to see the world through their own experience, and i know as an american it often gets lost on me that things like countries can change so rapidly.

It needs a timer showing the years.
All I see now is a bunch of changing blobs, and I think: "Oh, that's nice, when was this?"

I agree. A counter showing the years tick by would make this map more accessible. As it is, I only caught a few major moments.

Still, it's interesting to see people squabbling over the land as they slowly settle down into the countries we know today.

Along with the timer, as something more extreme, it'd be cool to make it interactive.

Awesome. But a bit of History knowledge will show this map is not time linear - well, it could never be time liner for that matter.

Consider the fall of Constantinople 1453 (00:42), it takes 30 seconds to see the Reconquista finish in 1492. So Wheelnut pointed out, a timer would help a lot.

Still, great work, went straight to my facebook page.

p.s. Napoleon was nothing close to the Mongols. Man!
