Locals carried shrines of black and pink phalluses at the Kanayama Shrine, a local penis-venerating shrine located in the Wakamiyahachimanguu village in Kawasaki City for the spring event celebrated annually on the first Sunday on April. The local festival was first held by prostitutes to pray for business prosperity and protection from sexually transmitted diseases. It is now celebrated as a tourist attraction to raise money for HIV.
