Near Fatal Incident at Goodge Street London Underground

On Wednesday, 23 July, shortly before 7.30pm, a pushchair containing a small child was left at the foot of the stairs between the two platforms at the Tube station. As the man who left the pushchair walked up the stairs to help other family members, the wind in the tunnel caught hold of the buggy and forced it onto the tracks - just after a train had left the platform. CCTV shows the child's mother running to the platform and onto the tracks to get the pushchair and child back to safety. But she did so only seconds before a second train pulled up to the platform. Chief Inspector Mark Lawrie said: "This was a frightening incident, not just for the scale of the danger the child was exposed to, but also because the woman then put her own life on the line by going onto the tracks. "We urgently need to identify the people involved to ensure the child wasn't injured as a result of the fall onto the tracks. "I have taken the step of releasing CCTV of the people involved to highlight the very real concern we have for all involved." Chief Insp Lawrie added: "This incident shows just how much respect rail passengers should have for the network. "It is, when used incorrectly, a hazardous environment and the proper care should always be taken, particularly on busy platforms and in areas which are affected by the gusts of wind which can blow through tunnels." Phil Hufton, Chief Operating Officer for London Underground, said: "London Underground has an excellent and continually improving safety record and such incidents on the Tube are very rare. The safety of our customers is our number one priority and like on all railways we advise customers to take care when travelling on the network. I urge anyone who knows the family involved to contact British Transport Police." British Transport Police officers are hoping the release of the CCTV images will enable them to identify the people involved and check they were not injured. Chief Insp Lawrie added: "If you know the people involved or have any information about the incident, please call us on 0800 40 50 40 or ring Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111." In all calls please ensure you quote log TSUB/B12 of 11/8/14. source
