Police Release Video Of Patient Attacking Nurses With Bar

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - Maplewood police released surveillance video Thursday of a patient who reportedly assaulted several nurses with a metal bar over the weekend. Police say the 68-year-old Charles Logan fled from St. John's Hospital Sunday and died right after officers shocked him with a Taser and arrested him. Police released the video because there had been requests to see it, and they have to release it by law. It shows Logan chasing several nurses through a nurses station and a hallway, and hitting some of them with the metal bar, which he'd taken off his bedframe. Eight nurses suffered minor injuries and one suffered a collapsed lung. When police got to the hospital, Logan had already fled. They found him a few blocks north, where they used a Taser to shock him. When that proved ineffective, they brought him to the ground and arrested him. "Immediately after that, he went limp. Officers turned him over and they realized he stopped breathing. They checked for pulse, he did not have one," Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell said. Police performed CPR on Logan, and emergency crews brought Logan back to St. John's, where he was pronounced dead shortly after. Police say that Logan was, by all accounts, a peaceful man. He was initially hospitalized after suffering from confusion. "This was totally outside of character, so something occurred, and we don't know what that was," Schnell said. Logan's body was taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The Minneapolis Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident.
