Police on the lookout for motorcycle daredevils speeding and popping wheelies on I-5

Washington State Police are on the lookout for a brash group of motorcycle daredevils. Alarmed motorists watched as the group of motorcyclists moved out across all lanes of Interstate 5 near Seattle on Saturday evening, speeding and popping wheelies. The incident prompted many people to call 911. One motorist rolled video as the motorcyclists fanned out to block traffic, then popped wheelies at 60 mph, in traffic. Washington State Patrol Sgt. Keith Trowbridge says charges could range from illegal lane changes to reckless driving. The bikes are fast and hard to catch without a dangerous high-speed pursuit. At Eastside Motosports in Bellevue, veteran motorcyclists on the staff checked out the video of Saturday's incident. "It's mixed emotions for me," said Dustin Gatten. "As I've done it and I've been in the car and seen it. And do I do it any more? No. Absolutely not. Unfortunately it's hard to find a place to go riding sometimes." It may be frustrating for motorcyclists, but the law warns that I-5 is not for popping wheelies. "If we get them, they're going to either pay some heavy fines or go to jail," said Trowbridge. The State Patrol is working to crack down on motorcycle stunts in traffic. A year ago, most incidents involved one rider darting out, doing his thing and speeding away. Saturday evening's I-5 was a bigger deal, a coordinated rolling freeway blockade. "It's hard for US to do that sort of thing," said Trowbridge. "We got radios. We talk about it ahead of time. We plan it out? and you guys are passing each other, doing wheelies." The State Patrol asks for your help in corralling the wheelie poppers. If you see it happening, try to spot a license plate or get a description of the riders or their gear, but don't get too close. It's just too dangerous.
