That was actually my least favorite book when I was a kid. It's the one my dad would always choose to read to me when he was in a rush. I preferred Richard Scary :)

My parents never read it to me. It's not too well known in Ireland (or, it wasn't, when my parents grew up), so they never never knew it and therefore never read it to me. Apparently a lot of people here /love/ that book and still do. I feel like I'm missing out, frankly. Sorry, it's 3 AM.

Only vivid bedtime memory I have is my older cousin (who was babysitting me sometimes) telling me scary stories about a witch that lives in a tree house deep in the forest, lures little children inside and then makes soap out of them.

So I learned to read when I was 4, I had no choice.
