What's the history on this? He doesn't seem all that sick does he? How do you get stuck in a hospital for 7 weeks and not really be sick?

TM, like the post intro said he has tuberculosis.
It's considered TB is eradicated in civilized society as the vaccine is very efficient: you get one right after birth, other when you start school and you get tested when you're 14 and get vaccinated only if needed (low antibody count).
When someone is diagnosed (after few wrong diagnosis usually) they're treated symptomatically (pneumonia) and have to be quarantined for a longer amount of time since they're carriers.
So this guy is feeling much better but he's still a petri dish.

If I had to spend 7 weeks in one hospital room, I would probably engage in a meaningful relationship with an i/v stand.

I saw this just the other day. For a guy trapped in a hospital room with what I will presume was just a laptop and a camera, he did a great job with this. The sound effects were a nice touch.
