Intense Storm Hits New York

Sept 16, 2010 - One person died when a massive, powerful, and fast-moving storm slammed New York City and surrounding areas Thursday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue tornado warnings for parts of New York and New Jersey, the New York Daily News reported. The storm, with winds up to 100mph (160kph), tore through neighborhoods of Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island, knocking down dozens of trees throughout the area. One person was killed in Queens, officials told the Daily News. At least two people were trapped in cars that were crushed by trees in Brooklyn and Queens. Downed trees on Long Island Rail Road tracks caused a system shutdown, while fallen trees also caused subway problems for above-ground train lines.
