Trains Collide in Poland Causing Huge Explosion

A massive fireball exploded in BiaƂystok, a city in north-eastern Poland on Monday morning after two freight trains collided at a rail junction at 5.30 am. Together they were transporting 20 rail fuel tanks filled with gasoline and diesel fuel. Jan Gradkowski, the chief firefighter of the Lubelski voivodship, told TVN24 that the trains had collided because one of them inexplicably derailed, causing it to career into the train traveling on the neighboring track. One of the fuel tanks exploded after the impact. The intense heat ignited leaking diesel fuel and firefighters were unable to decouple the remaining rail tanks. Just under two hours later a second explosion occurred and in total seven rail cars were engulfed in flames. Two people were injured as a result of the incident. At 9 am, Mr Gradkowski announced that thirty firefighting units had managed to bring the fires under control and that firefighters had started to cool other nearby rail tanks carrying propane and butane gas.
